After breakfast we depart for Bethany Beyond the Jordan located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. The area at Tell-Al-Kharrar on the River Jordan has been identified as the biblical site where John the Baptist was living in a Byzantine Monastery with a large baptismal pool. The findings from the first century AD confirm that this site was inhabited during the lives of Jesus and John the Baptist. We then drive south to the long-lost city of Petra. As we arrive to the town of Wadi Musa, we are at the entrance of Petra, and then we have ample time to view the “The Red Rose City”. Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is more than 2,000-year-old. This place that dominated the trade routes was completely lost to the western world by the 16th century and remained that way for 300 years. In 1812 it was “rediscovered.” Petra is carved out of rock, and to enter the city one must travel through a deep narrow gorge in the mountain called the siq. The Nabataean Kingdom endured for centuries, and Petra became widely admired for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. We visit the Palace Tomb, the Monastery, and the Treasury to name a few. The Apostle Paul studied here for three years and Herod the Great came from this city. Also, the movie “Indiana Jones” was filmed here. After exploring this exciting monument, we return to Amman. Dinner and overnight in Amman. (B,D)
