Itinerary

DAY 1: OCTOBER 11 - NEW YORK/ATHENS

We depart on an international overnight flight to Athens, Greece. Dinner and breakfast are served on board. Upon arrival in Athens in the evening on the same day, we are greeted by our tour guide, and next board our deluxe motorcoach for transfer to our hotel. Overnight and dinner in Athens. (D)

DAY 2: OCTOBER 12 - ATHENS/PIRAEUS/CRUISE

In the morning we enjoy a half day city tour of Athens before embarking on “7-night Steps of Paul” cruise. Paul preached at Mars Hill near the Acropolis and the ancient Agora was one of his many meeting places. We visit the famous Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Parthenon at its summit; stroll through the oldest neighborhood of Athens, Plaka; and see many Athens’ attractions including the University of Athens, National Library, the Academy of Athens, and the Squares of Omonia and Syntagma. We depart Piraeus port in the late afternoon and head for Thessaloniki. Overnight and dinner on the ship. (B/D

DAY 3: OCTOBER 13 - THESSALONIKI (GREECE)

After breakfast we travel to Veria (Berroia). Our first stop is the Citadel and the impressive Vlatadon Monastery which has magnificent views of the city. It was here that St. Paul preached on his Second Missionary in 49 AD. From here we travel to Veria (Berroia in the Bible) where St. Paul preached to the city’s ‘noble Jews’. In the afternoon we see the highlights of Thessaloniki that includes the White Tower on the seafront promenade; the Byzantine Museum; the Aristotelion University; the Citadel; Mt. Olympus; the 5th century Basilica of St. Demetrius, the largest church in Greece; the Arch of Galerius; and St. George’s Rotonda. Overnight, lunch and dinner on the ship. (B/L/D)

DAY 4: OCTOBER 14 - KAVALA (GREECE)

We drive to Veria (ancient Berea), where the Christian congregations were devoted to Paul’s works. We stop for a visit at the monument dedicated to the Apostle. Then we continue to Kalambaka to visit the famous monasteries. Perched atop soaring cliffs, gigantic rocks have been etched by time into a variety of shapes rooted deeply in the ground yet completely isolated from the world around them. The Monasteries with their wooden galleries and corniced rooftops hang precariously over the breath-taking abysses, with the Pindus range at their back. We return to Kalambaka, for dinner and overnight. B, D

DAY 5: OCTOBER 15 - ISTANBUL (TURKEY)

Our full-day excursion immerses us in this vibrant, colorful, and fascinating city at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. We visit the Sultanahmet district; see the Byzantine Hippodrome where horse and chariot racing once drew crowds of 100,000 or more; the Kaiser’s German fountain; the bronze Serpent Column of Delphi; the Egyptian Obelisk; the Walled Obelisk of Constantine VII; the Mosque of Sultan Ahmet, more popularly known as the Blue Mosque; the Church of the Holy Wisdom of God or Hagia Sophia, the epitome of Byzantine architecture; the Cistern of Philoxenos or the ‘Sunken Palace’, the water reservoir of Emperor Justinian was constructed in 535 AD; and finally the incredible Grand Bazaar, with over 4000 shops and stalls. DAY 6: OCTOBER 16 - DIKILI (TURKEY)

Turkey’s port city of Dikili is where we stop off for the ancient city of Pergamon. We visit the remains of the Asklepion, one of the world’s first hospitals. It’s a complex of mostly open-air buildings connected by porticoes dedicated to the god of Healing, Asclepius. As well as facilities for the care of patients, the Asklepion also included a theatre for up to 3,500 spectators, lecture halls and a library. We return the port of Dikili in the early afternoon. DAY 7: OCTOBER 17 - KUSADASI (TURKEY)

We arrive this morning to port of Kusadasi. Our visit to Ephesus brings us near to the site of one of the lost Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis. The temple earned the city the name ‘Servant of the Goddess.’ Among the sights to be admired still are the iconic and instantly recognizable Library of Celsus, the Gate of Augustus, the Magnesian Gate, the Agora, the Odeon, the Houses of the Patricians, the Great Theatre, Hadrian’s Temple, and the House of the Virgin Mary. One legend suggests Mary may have spent her last years here following Jesus’ instruction to St John the Evangelist to look after his mother. Ephesus is important in Christianity is that the apostle Paul lived, preached, and wrote extensively here including his Letter to the Corinthians. Overnight, lunch, and dinner on the ship. (B/L/D)

DAY 8: OCTOBER 18 - PATMOS (GREECE)

This excursion takes us to a small but fascinating island with connections to the Bible and to the Gods. It is having a long been a place of pilgrimage because Patmos is mentioned in the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible. It records that St John the Evangelist received a vision from Jesus here. We see the location where John is said to have had the revelation, the Cave or Grotto of the Apocalypse; visit the Monastery of St John; and a small museum which is home to priceless religious treasures including manuscripts. DAY 9: OCTOBER 19 - PIRAEUS/ATHENS (GREECE)

We disembark our ship in the morning and travel to Corinth where we first stop for a photo opportunity at this amazing feat of engineering, the Corinth Canal. Then, we head for ancient Corinth where St Paul lived, preached, and wrote around 50-52 AD and we will visit several of the sites associated with his stay. He established a church and wrote two epistles to the Corinthians. Paul spent 18 months in the city before the Jews of the city charged him with breaking the law and brought him before the proconsul Gallio at the city’s place of judgment (Bema). He dismissed the charges. After the tour, we transfer to our hotel in Athens. Overnight and dinner in Athens. (B/D)

DAY 10: OCTOBER 20 - ATHENS/NEW YORK

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight back home arriving the same day. (B)
